There has been a lot of buzz after this year’s Met Gala over Kim Kardashian dropping 16 pounds in only 3 weeks to fit into the iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President '' dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.
Other celebrities took to Instagram claiming that losing that kind of weight within that time frame is unhealthy, and that you would have to starve yourself or do some sort of crash diet to get those results.
Lili Reinhart of Riverdale, who is an advocate for body positivity, had some strong opinions that she shared in her instagram stories after the event.
"To walk on a red carpet and do an interview where you say how starving you are because you haven't eaten carbs in the last month… the toxicity of this industry really gets to me sometimes and I have to do my little Instagram-Story rants to release my rage."
We came to weigh in on this, because while striving to be underweight is unhealthy… this still sparks the big question:
The answer is both Yes and No.
YES - if you are dropping weight due to malnourishment.
NO - if you are dropping weight and still giving your body all the nutrients it needs.
We asked our ZOE experts about the topic, and here is what Damon Davis, founder of Zoe Wellness Center had to say:
“There are a lot of misconceptions about weight loss. Including that it’s unhealthy to lose weight quickly.”
“People think that you lose weight by starving yourself, but the truth is when you put your body into starvation mode, you might start to lose fat… but your body will eventually fight back. You’ll get extremely hungry and start to have cravings that will cause you to binge. This is one of many reasons why crash diets just don’t work.”
He goes on to say, “To actually lose weight quickly AND sustainably, you might have to cut down the calories a little bit – but you have to make sure you are still giving your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.”
The problem most people have with trying to lose weight is they don’t know exactly what their body needs to do it. There is no one-size-fits all diet plan that would work the same for everyone.
Our bodies are unique.
We all have different genetics, lifestyles and living environments… but how do you know exactly what your body needs?
Unfortunately it is impossible to figure it out all on your own, but this is why we do what we do.
ZOE Wellness plans are different from other weight loss plans because we have technology that is advanced enough to scan your entire body– letting us know what nutrients you have too little AND too much of.
This is how the weight falls off FAST, and how you are able to keep it off SAFELY.
We are able to create a plan that gives your body what it needs to stay happy, while eliminating the foods that are causing you to hold on to fat. After just one week, you can reset your cellular makeup and have your body work with you to lose weight – not fight against you. This is why we often say “It’s not just weight loss. It’s wellness.” Because losing weight is a byproduct of becoming healthy, and becoming healthy is the ultimate goal.
Our members have reported gaining energy, thinking more clearly, and even coming off of their prescription medications. The results will vary from person to person but losing weight quickly, healthily, and sustainably is absolutely attainable… and not just for celebrities. Real people are losing real weight.
